It took 2,977 drones to create this stunning 9/11 memorial show. Here’s how they pulled it off
To remember the lives of the 2,977 people killed in the 9/11 attacks 25 years ago, 2,977 drones were arranged in the shape of the original Minoru Yamasaki-designed World Trade Center at full architectural scale for a stunning temporary memorial. It took a lot of planning to make it work. Called “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor,” the commemorative public art installation on September 9 was sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts, and pulling it off required coordination with dozens of agencies. One of the biggest challenges was finding a suitable launch location. The installation was produced by Sky Elements (which has put on professional drone shows for Formula 1 and Lollapalooza) in partnership with creative director Addison Mehr, Studio Drift, Ideko, designer Yan Paul Dubbelman, and artistic advisers Shigeru Ban and Dean Maltz, with input from 9/11 families, survivors, and first responders.
