Since it launched in September 2023, Brick—the NFC-enabled productivity tool that lets users tap their phone to block a set list of apps—has become a popular way to get people to limit their screen time. Now, the company wants to bring the simplicity of its flagship product into the bedroom to help people get a good night’s sleep sans smartphone. Brick Night, launched Oct. 22, is only the second product from Brick, and it’s designed to make cutting out smartphone distraction effortless—removing the need to tap your phone at all. “After years of using Brick and talking with the people who use it, we’ve seen that boundaries work best when they’re built into your life,” Brick Co-founder TJ Driver tells Fast Company. “A natural next step was protecting physical spaces, so Brick Night builds on that foundation by automatically blocking distracting apps when you’re in your set space.” Brick Night uses Bluetooth to automatically block apps on a phone when the user enters their bedroom—or whatever room they want to be distraction-free. [Photo: Brick] To set up, users choose a list of apps to be blocked and set a duration for the block. Then, once Brick Night detects their phone nearby, th…

One of Wendy’s biggest franchisees is moving to potentially close as many as 60 restaurants, adding to the dozens of stores that it has already closed this year. The move comes after the franchisee, Meritage Hospitality Group, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Michigan on September 17, 2026. At the time of its September bankruptcy filing, Meritage operated 314 Wendy’s locations. Michigan-based Meritage is seeking approval to close at least 20 but no more than 60 stores, with potential closures to take place over the coming weeks through November 13. Which Wendy’s restaurants will close? The latest filing doesn’t name specific locations. It notes that specific closings will be determined and disclosed later. As Fast Company previously reported, Meritage has already closed 33 underperforming stores since filing for bankruptcy last month. The closures across nine states were required by the company’s lenders as a condition for Meritage to continue using cash during the bankruptcy process. In addition, the franchisee had shuttered around 60 underperforming stores before its September bankruptcy filing. Those cl…

Many people use AI for routine tasks like drafting emails or answering quick questions. But former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer used it for something that users on social media aren’t necessarily thrilled about. In a New York Times interview published over the weekend, Mayer revealed that when tasked with coming up with three bullet points to summarize what made her 10-year-old daughter special, she asked AI for help. “It came back and was like, your daughter is empathetic, creative, and an animal lover,” Mayer told the New York Times. Mayer served as Yahoo’s CEO from 2012 to 2017 and was Google’s first female engineer. She now runs an AI startup called Dazzle, which launched in September after raising $8 million in seed funding last year. “This is so bleak” To source the bullet points, Mayer used Dazzle AI, an AI personal assistant that relies on one’s camera roll rather than text. While Mayer allegedly found the response perfect, users on social media are thinking otherwise, with most pointing out the bizarre or disappointing nature of offloading human emotions and parenting to an agent. “This is so bleak,” political commentator Keith Edwards wrote on X, in a post with 1.9 million vi…

The NBA has struck deals that will make Kalshi and Polymarket the league’s preferred prediction markets, along with an agreement with a federal agency tasked with regulating those exchanges. Those agreements, announced Monday, are intended to provide “significant integrity protections for NBA-related markets,” including limitations on what can be offered on those exchanges, transparency when it comes to suspicious patterns by site users, and banning league and team personnel from making trades related to league events. The prediction markets will have “information-sharing obligations relating to investigations and suspicious trading,” the NBA said. The NBA has had similar guardrails in place with its sportsbook partners for some time and has cited instances where that system has flagged irregularities in betting patterns. “If you’re going to be betting on our games or trading on our games or playing fantasy around our games, it’s better for it to be regulated than unregulated,” said Scott Kaufman-Ross, the NBA’s head of media distribution and partnerships. “And clearly, our fans have interest in this activity. So, we’re in a better position to protect the integrity of our games in…
