Exploring the potential of immunotherapy in early-stage triple-negative breast cancer

Triple-negative breast cancers, which are more frequently diagnosed in younger women, are a subtype of breast tumor characterized by the absence of hormone receptors and HER2 overexpression. As a result, they do not respond to hormone therapy or HER2-targeted treatments. Their prognosis is generally less favorable than that of other breast cancer subtypes.

Personalized cancer vaccine plus immunotherapy reduces melanoma recurrence after surgery

Adding a personalized mRNA-based cancer vaccine to immunotherapy after surgery for high-risk melanoma reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 42%, according to results from the phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial presented at the ESMO Congress 2026. The vaccine, intismeran autogene, was given alongside pembrolizumab and compared with pembrolizumab alone.

Small deep brain structure may play major role in sustaining working memory, mouse experiments suggest

Reading a sentence, following a conversation, solving a problem or deciding what to do next: all of these rely on working memory. It allows the brain to hold information in mind for a few seconds, even after the stimulus has disappeared, to be able to compare it with new information, manipulate it and use it to guide our behavior. It therefore plays an essential role in the transition from perception to thought, and from thought to action.

Patients given apalutamide and hormone therapy around surgery may cut their risk of metastasis or death

An international phase 3 clinical trial that treated patients with high-risk localized and locally advanced prostate cancer with apalutamide—a next-generation neoadjuvant androgen-receptor pathway inhibitor (ARPI)—plus hormone therapy before and after prostate cancer surgery was further validated by a substudy demonstrating a reduced risk of metastasis or death compared with standard of care.

Previously unrecognized immune cells may drive harmful blood vessel growth in blinding eye diseases

A Northwestern Medicine study has identified a previously unrecognized population of immune cells that appears to fuel harmful blood vessel growth in multiple blinding eye diseases, according to the study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. The discovery could open the door to new treatments for patients who don't respond to existing therapies, said the study's senior author Jeremy Lavine, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of ophthalmology.

Immunotherapy combo extends survival for patients with aggressive small cell lung cancer, based on trial results

In patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC), tarlatamab, a bispecific T-cell engager, plus durvalumab as first-line maintenance therapy extended median overall survival by more than eight months, more than tripled progression-free survival and reduced the risk of death by 58% compared to durvalumab alone, according to results of the phase 3 open-label, multicenter, randomized DeLLphi-305 study.

Weakened chromosome anchors may help explain age-related declines in egg quality

As many as one in six adults face fertility difficulties worldwide, research has shown, and the challenge becomes harder as they age. Starting around age 35, the risk of eggs carrying an abnormal number of chromosomes rises steeply, contributing to declining fertility and increasing miscarriage rates. Understanding why these errors occur is essential for improving reproductive outcomes.
